Darcy Coates is at it again! This time, I read Dead Lake.
Sam is an artist desperate to save her floundering career. With a last-chance exhibition looming and her inspiration gone, she retreats to a secluded cabin deep in the forest. No neighbors. No phone. No distractions. Just seven days to paint or fail.
But someone else is out there.
At first, it’s just a shadow on the shore. A figure in the distance. Then he begins to follow her. Sabotage her. Trap her. With her car disabled and her last link to the outside world destroyed, Sam realizes she’s the prey in a terrifying game.

What I loved most about this book was the constant feeling of unease. Darcy Coates has a way of making ordinary places feel incredibly creepy. The isolated cabin, the dark forest, and the still waters of Dead Lake create the perfect setting for a suspenseful story. Every little noise or shadow made me wonder what was coming next.
Sam is a character that’s easy to root for. She’s dealing with the pressure of saving her career while trying to overcome her creative block, and suddenly she’s fighting for something much more important. I found myself completely invested in her story and anxious to see how everything would unfold.
The mystery builds at the perfect pace. Just when I thought I had figured out what was happening, another clue or strange encounter made me question everything again. The stories about the missing hikers and the unsettling atmosphere kept the tension high from beginning to end.
As always, Darcy Coates pulled me into the story so completely that I lost track of time. Her descriptions make every scene feel vivid, and I could easily picture the cabin, the dock, and the eerie shoreline. She creates an atmosphere that makes you feel like you’re right there alongside the characters.
If you’re a fan of isolated settings, psychological suspense, and stories that keep you guessing until the very end, I definitely recommend Dead Lake. It’s another fantastic read from an author who never disappoints.
