Book Report: Blood Retreat

Book 8 of the FBI Agent Jade Monrow Live or Die Series by C.M. Sutter is Blood Retreat. Jade Monroes gets a much-needed vacation when she stays at a remote cabin belonging to her former partner, Jack Steele. Jade finally takes a vacation. And she gets to use her former partner’s cabin for. Great retreat. Things take a dark tur,n though, when two escaped convicts eye her perfect vehicle and remote cabin.

They followed her to the cabin after she went grocery shopping. She had gone down to the water to relax. But after one of the criminals made a noise, she looked up to see who it was. Now what?! As she went to check the cabin, she saw someone get in her car. And that’s when she was struck with a log by another person. There were 2 of them.

Rifling through her purse, they found her badge. With fear in their eyes, they tied Jade up. They knew they’d have to kill her.

But Jade gets the jump on one of them while the other had gone into town. She kicked him in the groin and ran off into the woods. But her freedom didn’t last long. He caught up to her, defeated her, and began dragging her back to the cabin. And even worse, they spray-painted her orange Mustang black. That hurt.

Jade escaped again while the men were trying to dispose of their other stolen car in the lake. And by now, her sister was beyond worried and called Jack, the cabin owner, for help. He ended up calling in a welfare check, and the local PD let Jack know the cameras are gone, there’s broken glass on the porch, and signs from someone being tied up. And the PD let Jack know that 2 convicts escaped. They’re still at large. This is not good.

I love that not only did Jack jump in the car to head to the cabin, but so did Jade’s sister Amber and their friend Kate go, too.

Jade hunkered down on the patio of an abandoned house, but Sonny and Cruise found her again. This time, they took her into the abandoned house. But there’s an issue. They know a cop came to the house. They’re looking for them. And Jade. Little do they know they’re about to have a whole bunch of law enforcement out looking. This included Renz and two other FBI agents. And I loved the whole group working together to track down clues. They’re all so worried about Jad,e and they’ll stop at nothing to find her.

Then we learn that Cruise and Sonny are working to get dope into the prison. That’s their game. And they plan to make a lot of money doing it. Jade got in the way. And where is she? They had given her to someone else to take care of.

Renz and team figure out who was helping the cons. Now they need the evidence against him. And what’s worse, prison employees might be involved. As a small team trails Tony, the guy who works at the prison, he wanders back to the woods where he left Jade for dead. But he can’t locate her. Where is she? Well, those guys took Tony down. And now a team is heading to that location, hopefully to find Jade.

While searching the forest, Kate has a vision. She knows where Jade is. And the drone located her via heat signature. I swear I might cry at this point. To even attempt to understand the agony her sister Amber is going through. But they found her. She’s not in good shape, but she’s alive. She was taken to the hospital by helicopter and is in surgery.

In the meantime, an old lady from a different town called the police on a grandson she doesn’t have staying with her, along with some of his friends. This will break the case wide open.  And boy does it. They take Sonny and Cruise into custody and get more info. As they suspected, the warden and several others at the prison where Sonny and Cruise were held had a hand in the drug trafficking and their escape. They were all under arrest.

Jade was released from the hospital, and upon her request, they used one last day to have a vacation day with swimming and a barbecue. It was Jade’s wish to have them all together. And now she does. And best of all, Amber and Kate went to grab Mildred, the lady who Sonny pretended was his grandma. I cried a little at that point. It was such a great ending.
