Book Report: Blood Reckoning

Book 3 in the FBI Agent Jade Monroe Live or Dies Series by C.M. Sutter is Blood Reckoning. Instead of getting a rare Saturday off, Jade is quickly called back to service when five homeless people are murdered overnight. The daughter of the Milwaukee mayor is among a set of five people murdered days later. In fact, all of those victims had a loved one with connections to the mayor. But no one in the mayor’s circle is talking. Can Jade Monroe and her partner, Lorenzo DeLeon, figure this out before it’s too late?

Wow, did this book grab my attention. Each book is like a Criminal Minds episode. I would love to see a televised version of each book. That series would be amazing!

Also amazing, is how the FBI work together and work with other law enforcement officials to catch the bad guys. Without cooperation with any type of crime, solving it would be impossible.

In this story, the bad guys are the parents of 5 kids killed months ago at the hands of the Mayor. He had driven home drunk after an event and ran a van full of kids off the road just as they were coming home from a church camp. They were Jacob and Evelyn’s kids who are the leaders of this crime ring.

Their plan is to involve people who can help them carry out some murders. First is a trial run using homeless people as victims. They meant nothing in this scheme. They were only pawns used as practice. The real victims were people involved in the cover up of the accident. People who were close to the Mayor.

One by one they start dying just as the agents realize what happened. But that’s not all. Jade Monroe got in their way. She prevented them from carrying out this mission in a timely manner. So she needed to be wounded too. They took her sister Amber hostage as well as the Mayor and his wife.

Jade is allowed to enter the Mayor’s residence while Renz and SWAT look for another way in. Evelyn, filled with so much grief, puts the gun against her head and pulls the trigger. Jacob shoots and kills the Mayor. Renz rushes in to take down Jacob just as SWAT enters.

Amber is safe. Evelyn and Jacob are dead. The Mayor will never pay for what he did. And Marie ends up in a woman’s prison elsewhere. It’s mostly covered up again. But that was the deal. Jade isn’t sure it was right but that’s how it goes.

As a sincere thank you, Amber will be cooking Renz a four course meal. He insists he’s just simple, but Jade says it won’t matter. And it probably won’t be the last meal.

I love how they work things out and bounce ideas around. I like how Maureen keeps it running smooth and won’t let them go off the rails. I really love how it’s clear they’re becoming a family.

I can’t wait for the next one!
