Book Report: The Haunting of Ashburn House

Well, I’m sticking with the haunted house theme! It really is the perfect time of year. This time, it’s The Haunting of Ashburn House by Darcy Coates.

We start with Adrienne and her cat Wolfgang in a taxi cab pulling up to their strange old house left to her by her great-aunt who recently died. She wasn’t aware of any family members other than her mom who also just recently died of cancer. She realizes she’s been to this house before. When she was young, her mom took Adrienne out of the house. Adrienne remembers her mom crying, blood on her mom, and a strange tall women standing in the doorway all dressed in black. Who is this woman? Is this her great-aunt?

Strange things start happening to Adrienne, and this house seems to take on a life of its own. Will she start believing in ghosts? Will she find the answers on how to survive this with no phone and no computer? Who is the undead person she fought off in the woods?

This is a true ghost story, and I loved every minute of it. I finished this book in 3 days because I just had to know what the real story was. I honestly didn’t anticipate that it was a true haunting. Instead, I kept thinking about how the young women she befriended must be playing tricks on her. Or that the people who spread rumors about the house must be involved somehow. I even thought that the people in the small town surely must be in on it because they’re all too nice. Apparently, I really mistrust people.

If you want a real ghost story, this book is for you. I can’t recommend it enough!
