I’ve really been enjoying Riley Sager‘s books. This one, The Last Time I Lied, may be my favorite so far.
Two Truths and a Lie. Vivian, Natalie, Allison, and Emma played it all the time in their cabin at Camp Nightingale. But the games ended the night Emma sleepily watched the others sneak out into the darkness. The last she, or anyone, saw of the teenagers was Vivian closing the cabin door behind her.
Fifteen years later, Emma is a rising star in the New York art scene. When the paintings catch the attention of the wealthy owner of Camp Nightingale, she implores Emma to come back to the newly reopened camp as a painting instructor.
Despite her guilt and anxiety, Emma agrees to revisit her past. Emma is even assigned to the same cabin she slept in as a teenager, although the security camera pointed at her door is a disturbing new addition.
As cryptic clues about the camp’s origins begin to surface, Emma attempts to find out what really happened to her friends. But her closure could come at a deadly price.
I really enjoyed the mystery in this book. I was afraid that Emma really was losing it at times, but she kept her head when it mattered. And when three new girls go missing, all eyes are on her. But she doesn’t stop until she finds them. Though suspicion is rightfully cast on Emma, she fights to prove that this time, she isn’t imagining things.
There were so many times I thought I had figured out what happened to Vivian, Natalie, and Allison, only to realize I was completely wrong. The story kept changing just enough to make me question everyone and everything I thought I knew. I even thought maybe Emma did do something all those years ago. And even when I thought the mystery had finally been solved, there was still more to come.
I loved the way everything came together at the end. The twists were surprising without feeling like they came out of nowhere, and the final reveal was one I definitely didn’t see coming. The Last Time I Lied kept me guessing all the way through, and it may be my favorite Riley Sager book I’ve read so far.
