Devin and Braden both started soccer around 4 and 5. Austin’s at the same age. So, we signed him up for rec soccer. Though we love ESC, we decided to send him to North OKC. The fields are close to our house and easier to get to.
And I’m so glad we did.
We got put on a great team with a great coach and great parents. Something that’s really hard to find.
Our first practice started off rough. He was so nervous and didn’t want to go off by himself. But we forced him. He’s got to get out of his shell. And boy did he!
They did a lot of simple tasks. And we learned quickly just how fast that kid was. Fastest out there!
After several games and practices, they all learned some skills. We didn’t lose a single outdoor game!
Then, we went to indoor. Got a new set of snazzy uniforms, too! And they’re green, Austin’s favorite color! We went the whole first indoor season undefeated! We also found out they all the kids love double-headers! (By the way, Austin thought that meant hitting the ball with your head twice!)
Our real test has been this season. We’ve come up against some new, tough teams. We’ve had a close win, a big loss, and then a good win.
I’m so glad we found this team and I can’t wait to see where he goes from here. Will he continue to grow as a soccer player – maybe get better than Devin? Or is this just a phase that he’ll outgrow – something he’ll tire of a few years from now.
I don’t know the answer to that. But I do know that he loves it for now. And we’ll keep supporting him as long as he does. We’ve already registered him for the next outdoor season. It may add another nightly task, but it’s so worth it!
