A Tail of Two Dogs

It’s been a year since we adopted Ruby and Mac.

We got them in August 2024. As I mentioned in the last blog post about them, we had originally just wanted to adopt Ruby. But Mac tagged along, and we fell in love with him. I am so happy we ended up with both, too. They play well with Riley and Saydee, but the two of them are nearly inseparable. Since they’re both 2 years old now (with Ruby being a few months older), they can roughhouse with each other and play as long as they want.

It’s been a change, though, having two new puppies. They need constant walks. Mac loves them. He doesn’t get enough of them! And, even though Ruby tries to hide from the leash, she’s crushed if she doesn’t get to go. I can walk them both myself without the need for help. But Saydee needs her walks, too, and I can’t do all three. So, it’s forced us to try and schedule who takes whom and when. It’s been more difficult during the summer heat, but this cooler weather has helped. We can take them after school and work, and that’s been great, especially when Austin gets to ride his bike.

Mac

In the year we’ve had them, we’ve definitely noticed their quirks. Mac is still sometimes skiddish, but he’s really grown up. He’s changed a lot, especially in the face. It’s not a puppy anymore! He loves his walks and his treats. He loves Riley, though she only tolerates him. He also loves Saydee. I mean, really, he just loves. Everyone. And everything. He’s such a snuggler, too. Loves to sit and sleep with me, and he curls up into a tight little ball. We call him a couch croissant! He’s also fond of wildlife, mainly possums and rabbits, which we have a ton of!

While I’m working, he’ll start to talk to me. A tiny little bark to get my attention. It works. Every. Time! Love this little boy.

Ruby

Ruby loves to sleep on her back. It must be comfortable because she does it a lot. And it cracks me up every time! And she’s definitely a lazy dog. Which is fine with me. She always runs away when I grab for her leash. So one time I decided not to take her. She wants to be lazy…fine. She can rest here. I can take Saydee and Mac, and we can walk longer…and faster! Nope, that was a bad idea. She absolutely loves walks and was so mad at me for not taking her. So I won’t do that again!

She also talks to me while I’m working. Well, anytime I’m not showing her any attention. These dogs sleep most of the time, but when they want lovin’, they want lovin’! Also, she’s called our House Hippo, which suits her perfectly!

Mac is really special to me. He was a puppy that we hadn’t planned on getting, but we immediately fell in love and just had to have him. We had to take care of him. But Ruby is something entirely different. I want to believe she’s my new Bailey. Not that Bailey could ever be replaced. Because she can’t. But Ruby is here in my life for a reason, and I have to think that she’s feeling that void that Bailey left. Ruby is sweet, funny, and so snuggly. She sits with me when we watch TV and lies with me when we go to bed. She darts into the bed to lie with me, and moans at me when it’s breakfast time. She paws at me when she wants some belly rubs and feels comfortable making any space her own. I love this dog more than I can convey.

Here’s to Another Year

So here’s to another year. Another year of fun, excitement, sweetness, and cuteness overload!
